Indian student captured by Ukraine joined Russian army to avoid drug charges, says mother

The first known Indian caught in the ongoing conflict was captured by Ukraine after he was suspected of fighting for Russian forces. Two years ago, 22-year-old Sahil Majothi from Gujarat, India, traveled to Russia to pursue a degree in computer engineering. He was wrongfully accused in a narcotics case last April, according to his mother. According to a video shown by Ukraine's army on Tuesday, Mr. Majothi joined in the Russian army in order to avoid being imprisoned on drug-related accusations. According to the Indian foreign ministry, it is looking into the matter and has not heard anything official from Ukraine. The Russian government has been requested to respond by the BBC.

It's sad that people think they will earn well in the foreign countries and leave their own land to earn, but who knows? They may get stuck like this boy stuck. I think there are lots of such cases where people are given the list for a good job/study, and they fall into the trap and ruin their lives. Especially the people from the poor countries become victims and are trapped by these fraudulent schemes. We must think of our safety first, then money.

It is a pity. This shows desperation on the part of Russia because this boy, like many others, will just be used as "cannon fodder". They have no military value and lack any training to excel at the battlefront. I hope the boy is deported to his country to meet his family. Thank God he is still alive.
