Woman who bit off attacker's tongue acquitted after 61 years

A court quashed a South Korean woman's decades-old conviction for reportedly biting off a man's tongue during a sexual assault, leading to her acquittal. Choi Mal-ja was found guilty of severe bodily harm at the age of eighteen and given a ten-month jail sentence. Her 21-year-old attacker was given a reduced sentence of six months.

A retrial in the southern city of Busan started in July following a struggle to clear her name that lasted for years. Prosecutors apologized to her during the initial hearing and, in a rare gesture, requested that the court overturn the conviction. "I had to find an outcome to this problem... Ms. Choi stated, "I want to defend other victims who have the same fate as me."
